And That’s a wrap! The 36th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival closes bigger and better than ever

Tuesday, September 20th, 2011

Well, that’s a wrap on another highly successful Toronto International Film Festival. It was a thrill again to ride with Cadillac and cover what has become one of the busiest film festivals in the world. We hope you enjoyed Cadillac Festival Insider coverage as we took you inside TIFF – the press conferences, red carpets, parties, and more!

TIFF seemed to grow again this year as much of the movie-goer action emerged along King street in Toronto. We saw the official home of TIFF – the Bell Lightbox open fully and be a hub of activity. The Festival also utilized a new theatre opening weekend – the beautiful and spacious Princess Of Wales.

But alas, even the best parties have to end. So, the TIFF Cadillacs have been cleaned up and put away for another year. But like us Festival Insiders, we’ll all be back to do it again next year. Enjoy some of our highlights of the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival:

- The Biggest Band in the world kicks-off TIFF’11
- Festival Insider Skye has dreams come true at Hello! Canada party
- Madonna makes a Gala red carpet appearance to the delight of fans.
- “Brangelina” is the number one power-couple of TIFF
- infamous street-artist Mr. Brainwash all over TIFF

and don’t forget, all the Cadillac Festival Insider photographs are permanently archived on our Flickr feed.

Freida Pinto arrives to ‘Trishna’ red carpet premiere with Dev Patel at Princess of Wales theatre

Sunday, September 11th, 2011

Pandemonium ensued when Freida Pinto arrived at the Princess Of Wales theatre on Friday night for the Toronto International Film Festival premiere of Trishna. When Freida emerged from the vehicle holding hands with boyfriend Dev Patel both sides of King st. outside the theatre exploded in cheers.

Cadillac Festival Insider fondly remembers three years ago at the Festival when a little film Pinto and Patel were starring in, Slumdog Millionaire, came out of the Festival to critical acclaim and the 2008 Cadillac People’s Choice Award as fan favorite film. (an award Freida accepted on behalf of the film.) Slumdog would go on to capture the Best Picture Oscar. Also along the way, loved boomed between young stars Pinto and Patel. It’s nice to see the couple celebrating the 2011 edition of the Festival together.

[PHOTOS] Opening Night of TIFF – U2′s Bono and Edge at the Gala premiere of From The Sky Down

Friday, September 9th, 2011

The Toronto International Film Festival opened with a bang last night as two members of the world’s biggest band – Bono and Edge of U2 made a highly anticipated visit to the Gala premiere of, From The Sky Down. Directed by Oscar-winner Davis Guggenheim, the documentary looks at a key time in the band’s history twenty years ago when they recorded the landmark album, Achtung Baby.

A big crowd of fans assembled early near the Roy Thomson Hall red carpet hoping for a chance to get up-close and personal to the band. And they didn’t disappoint. As soon as the TIFF Cadillac Escalades arrived and Bono and Edge emerged, they walked right over to the fans, greeting them and signing lots of autographs.

U2 documentary From The Sky Down from director Davis Guggenheim will open the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival

Thursday, August 4th, 2011

The Toronto International Film Festival is breaking with tradition in its 36th edition with selecting a documentary as its opening night film on September 8th. TIFF usually opens on the Thursday night with a Canadian feature. Never shy about challenging convention – TIFF is opening with a documentary for 2011, and on one of the biggest bands in the world – U2.

Directed by Davis Guggenheim, From The Sky Down zeros in on one distinct time in the band’s life – the making of the seminal U2 record Achtung Baby twenty years ago. The documentary combines never-seen-before archival footage of the band recording the album at Hansa studio in Berlin with brand new interviews.

Guggenheim won an Academy Award for Best Documentary for An Inconvenient Truth. Davis brought some rock legends to TIFF during 2009 when his guitar doc, It Might Get Loud saw icons Jimmy Page, U2′s Edge, and Jack White in Toronto to support the film. Last year, Davis was in Toronto with Microsoft’s founder Bill Gates to premiere his education themed documentary, Waiting For Superman.

So Guggenheim returns again in 2011 to Toronto – this time with the prestigious opening night slot and Roy Thomson Hall Gala premiere. U2 was last seen with Guggenheim during May in Winnipeg filming scenes at their concert for From The Sky Down.

U2, especially Bono are no strangers to the Toronto Film Festival. Bono and Edge made a surprise appearance in 2009 when they showed up to the red carpet of fellow Irishman Neil Jordan’s premiere. A few years before that, Bono again appeared on a few TIFF red carpets to support films including the Leonard Cohen documentary, I’m Your Man.

MALIN AKERMAN and RYAN PHILLIPPE premiere “The Bang Bang Club” at Roy Thomson Hall Gala in Toronto

While covering TIFF tends to occupy the majority of a Festival Insider’s schedule – leaving little time for actually seeing any films. If this insider finds time for one this festival – it will be The Bang Bang Club. It’s based on the true story of four photojournalists who set out to capture the final days of apartheid in South Africa.

“Most films are hard if they’re beautifully written and they’re dealing with a subject matter that isn’t easy, that isn’t a comedy – devastating. But at the same time I wanted to do it justice for the people that have been through this.” – NICOLE KIDMAN

It was almost a SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE reunion on the TIFF’10 red carpets as FREIDA PINTO and boyfriend DEV PATEL premiere “You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger” while across town director DANNY BOYLE premieres “127 Hours”

In an ironic twist Pinto and Patel’s “Slumdog Millionaire” director Danny Boyle is also at the festival with his Slumdog follow-up “127 Hours.” I’m sure the only thing that kept Danny away from joining his former Slumdog cast at Pinto’s premiere is that Boyle’s was occurring at the same time up the street. It was only two years ago at TIFF where “the little movie made in India” went on to do big things.

5 GREAT things to do around the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival – FOR FREE!

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

You don’t need the hottest party invite or Gala screening ticket to enjoy the buzz of the Toronto Film Festival. There are still plenty of downtown sites to take in the magic of TIFF and it doesn’t even have to cost you a dime. We can suggest these 5 great things to do around TIFF for FREE;

1. THE TIFF RED CARPET PREMIERES – The TIFF red carpet screenings still offer the best bang for your buck for getting up close and personal with a movie star. It’s rare a celebrity doesn’t interact with the crowd at their premiere. We’ve seen before some stars spend more time with the fans, then the media. Roy Thomson Hall Gala premieres have a large area where crowds gather. But warning – if you want a good spot on the fence, get their early. The Elgin Winter Theatre and Ryerson are also very fan friendly and good spots for seeing your favorite actors up close. Tip: The stars exiting the Elgin theatre out the back door can be an intimate vantage point.

2. YORKVILLE AVE. – Yes, some festival buzz is moving south to King st., but Yorkville avenue is still home to two of Toronto’s most swanky TIFF hotels – The Four Seasons and The Hazelton. So Yorkville is always a bees hive of activity come TIFF time – especially opening weekend. Grab a coffee and take a seat outside on the Starbucks patio for some fun people watching.

3. THE PARTIES – The Hello Canada magazine party, the Variety Studio at Holt Renfrew, In Style Party. You may not get into these events – but many have red carpets outside and sometimes hundreds of fans will gather in the streets.

4. ESSENTIAL CINEMA MUSEUM and FILM SCREENINGS – at the TIFF Bell Lightbox opening daily September 12th the exhibit will feature movie props, costumes, and posters from some of most popular movies ever. TIP: They’ll also be free screenings of past great TIFF films.

5. TIFF BLOCK PARTY – on Sunday, September 12th. Everybody is invited to one of TIFF’s coolest parties this year. The opening of the BELL Lightbox on Sunday afternoon. Free food and entertaiment including the headlining of a major Canadian act that TIFF is keeping secret for now (but we think is Nelly Furtado.)

TIFF’10 GALA: The Town – director Ben Affleck bringing an all-star cast to Toronto

Monday, September 6th, 2010

One of the most anticipated Gala premieres at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival is for director Ben Affleck’s THE TOWN. In Affleck’s sophomore directorial effort, Ben has managed to assemble a powerhouse cast. From the A-list actor-turned-director to Oscar nominees, and even a Gossip Girl star. This Roy Thomson Hall Gala is sure to be a centre of attention that night in Toronto.

Because one Cadillac Festival Insider can’t be everywhere during TIFF – there really are just TOO many events going on some evenings. We’ve enlisted some help from a few people who will share their Cadillac Festival Insider experiences.

Toronto PR girl, and The A List Blogger Alanna Glicksman will be attending THE TOWN’s Gala premiere screeening and will share her experiences later in the week. Alanna blogs today on The A List;

The star-studded TIFF gala premiere of The Town is one of this year’s hot ticket shows. With Ben Affleck, Blake Lively, Jeremy Renner and Rebecca Hall set to grace the red carpet with their presence, the paparazzi will have lots of tabloid-worthy pictures to sell. Sure to dazzle is the lovely Blake, who is famous for her baring all on the red carpet, and dashing Ben, who like a fine wine only gets better with age.

The rumor mill is buzzing about possible red carpet appearances from significant others Penn Badgley and Jennifer Garner, but my money’s on a Penn appearance. The Gossip Girl couple aren’t shy about flaunting their love, while Ben and Jen tend to avoid walking the red carpet together.

The Toronto Film Festival Galas at Roy Thomson Hall was a great place for TIFF celebrity sightings

Sunday, September 20th, 2009

(festivalinsider.ca) If there was one change that proved popular this TIFF – it was the new red carpet set-up at Toronto’s Roy Thomson Hall. In years previous, The red carpet was on one side of the tight Simcoe St. and fans were stuck waiting on the OTHER side of the street. For 2009, the red carpet Cadillac drop-off of TIFF guests was brought into a park on the east side of the theatre, allowing the fans wanting a glimpse of their favorite TIFF stars a much closer look, and an excellent chance for a photo or autograph.

WHIP IT stars MARCIA GAY HARDEN is one very proud mother to EULALA SCHEEL at Toronto Roller Derby exhibition and red carpet

Sunday, September 20th, 2009

(festivalinsider.ca) There were some proud parents on display during TIFF ’09. Ivan and Jason Reitman were at the Toronto festival to support multiple movies. Michael Moore’s father was beaming on the Capitalism red carpet. And Oscar and Tony award winning actress Marcia Gay Harden and her daughter Eulala Scheel joined her WHIP IT cast at TIFF. Both have roles in the Drew Barrymore directed film.

Tom Ford’s A SINGLE MAN comes to TIFF on Colin Firth’s BEST ACTOR Venice honors – Weinstein Co. acquire distribution

Saturday, September 19th, 2009

Actors Julianne Moore and Colin Firth joined TOM FORD at the very well-dressed and attended A Single Man after-party held at the Gardiner Museum. Fashion designer turned director-writer FORD proved during the 2009 Toronto Festival he will be a force in the film business. Riding an impressive wave of positive buzz from the Venice Film Festival where Colin Firth’s performance from Ford’s film won BEST ACTOR honors. A SINGLE MAN came out of the Toronto Festival with TIFF’s largest deal as the Weinstein Co. paid a few million dollars to secure U.S. distribution rights for Ford’s directorial debut.

CAREY MULLIGAN earning rave reviews in Toronto premiering AN EDUCATION – coming to America next in Wall Street 2 with Shia Lebouef

Friday, September 18th, 2009

Your going to be hearing a lot more about British up-and-coming actress Carey Mulligan in the next year. Mulligan has a breakout role in AN EDUCATION, playing to rave reviews at TIFF and other film festivals. Mulligan’s stay in Toronto for the films premiere was a brief one. She had to get back to the New York set of Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps acting opposite Shia Lebouef in the Oliver Stone directed sequel to the eighties hit. It will be Carey’s first big role in an American movie. If that doesn’t endear her to North American audiences, Ms. Mulligan is sure to appear in the gossip mags as she is rumored to be dating her Wall Street co-star Lebouef.

KEANU REEVES opens the DOOR on second chapter of acting career with Rebecca Miller’s The Private Lives of Pippa Lee premiering at TIFF

Friday, September 18th, 2009

(festivalinsider.ca) Keanu Reeves made a rare film festival appearance in Toronto this week with Rebecca Miller’s The Private Lives of Pippa Lee which premiered at TIFF to very good reviews (especially for Reeves’ co-star in the film Robin Wright Penn.) Reeves touched upon a number of subjects during a day of press leading up to the films Gala premiere. He shared his thoughts on the recent passing of a friend Patrick Swayze, “he was a beautiful person and honest.” Keanu also talked at length about how his career is in transition from the earlier action oriented parts he had become known for. “I feel I’m starting the second chapter of my career. It’s a property of age. Certain roles and what you’ve done in the past just don’t hold the same power…” said Reeves during the press conference for the film.

“I know I’ve been very lucky, and at this point, I don’t really have to work for dough.” – Keanu Reeves

Nice guy Rick Campanelli of ET Canada gives his jacket to a shivering NATALIE PORTMAN on Toronto red carpet

Friday, September 18th, 2009

ET Canada reporter Rick Campanelli proved chivalry is not dead on the red carpet of the Toronto International Film Festival. NATALIE PORTMAN arrived at her Roy Thomson Hall Gala premiere for Love and Other Impossible Pursuits looking simply sensational in a strapless mini dress. But with the red carpet outside and it being September in Toronto, there was a slight chill in the air. As Ms. Portman was doing her media duties, Campanelli noticed Natalie was cold. So he offered up his jacket – an offer Ms. Portman gladly accepted. We do hear the jacket was returned to Rick later that evening. And yes, the insider wonders, does Rick ever wash that coat again?

Harvey Weinstein attends YOUTH IN REVOLT premiere – Weinstein Co. still showing film world their major players in Toronto with pick-up of Tom Ford’s A SINGLE MAN

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

The insiders camera caught iconic film executive Harvey Weinstein quietly stepping into the Toronto premiere of YOUTH IN REVOLT starring Michael Cera and Portia Doubleday. It seems the Weinstein Co. is on a bit of a comeback lately after that revealing feature about the brothers in a recent New York Times magazine. First, Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds is a box office hit still collecting very good receipts overseas. Now during this Toronto International Film Festival, Youth in Revolt was met with enthusiastic applause and reviews after its TIFF Premiere, and the Weinsteins just put down $1 million plus for the U.S. and German rights to TOM FORD’S “A Single Man” (also having a TIFF premiere)
